EXPEDITED CABLE SERVICE.

BETWEEN AUSTRALIA AND CANADA.

MAY MEAN REDUCED RATES.

(Received January 26, 8.26 a.m.)

SYDNEY, Jan. 25.

Mr Milward, manager for the Pacific Cable Board in the Pacific, has returned from a visit to. Canada. He says that the Board now controls a line of communication from Australia to Montreal, and has effected an: installation which will enable despatched cables to be expedited by twenty-five per cent; in other words,. it will be able to deal with twentyfive per centum more business in- a given time.

Mr Milward's mission to Canada was for the purpose of installing the apparatus and taking over for the Board the line previously leased from. the> Canadian-Pacific Telegraph Company. It can now carry messages over 6100 miles with only one land line, wiiereas the old scheme required three, handlings.

Asked if the innovation would be likely to lead to a reduction of rateswithin a reasonable time, Mi- Milward said: "It places us in a better- position in regard to reduced cost. The present weekly average of the Pacific line is forty-two thousand words. This shows a marked continuous increase, and it is conceivable, if the Board increases the carrying capacity of the cables to a large extent, and the public supply sufficient business, that the rates may be affected."

Referring to the All Red route, he declared it would obviously be an advantage to have a cable right through. The Atlantic cables at the present time were practically controlled by American capitalists.
