(Reooivei December 19, 8.33 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 17. Violent gales continue in England and Wales. The Dover-Calais and Ostend mail services are suspended. Protective works at Selsea wexe swept away, and the peninsula converted into an island. Six fishermen were drowned at Arklow. Vast areas in the midlands are under water. The country side of Warwickshire is an inland sea. Stock have been swept away.. The low-lying parts of Nottingham are flooded for seventy miles. The gale wrought great havoc in the southern watering plapes. Prome(nades were destroyed and piers damaged. The sea swept Hastings, flooding hotels, shops, and houses in the principal square. The sea burst up the esplanade at Portsmouth and flooded half of Southsea Common. Boats are used in the streets at Monmouth and Cowes. A hurricane in the Bristol Channel caused extensive damage. At Ilfracombe all the shops on the promenade were invaded by the sea and the contents destroyed. The walls of several houses Avere demolished. There were many gallant lifeboat rescues.
