At the monthly meeting of the

'Chamber of Commerce, held on ths

evening of the 22 nd inst.., Mr S. J. McCormick occupied the chair, and there was a fair attendance of members. NEW MEMBERS. The usual formal, business having been attended to, the following new members were .elected:—Messrs Bain .and Christian, Mackesy and Son, .1. H. .Phillips, T. H. Steadman, and D. Wright. RAILWAY GUIDE MAP. The Secretary explained the steps that had bevn taken in 1907. to have the railway time-tu'ble map amended to show that both trout and feathered! game were av-ailfaM-e in North •Auckland; but recent correspondence showed that no slops had be-on taken by the Department in the matter, and certain information was authorised to be forwu.rdec":.< so as to remely, if possible, the omission from the - map. DR. FINDLAY'S VISIT. Correspondence was gone through in reference to the Hon. Dr. Findlay's recent visit, which' it Avas felt had redounded to the credit of the Chamber, while assuring , , permanent help for the North from which the district would undoubtedly benefit in the future. DARGAVILLE-WHANGAREI MAILS. A notification from the Secretary to the Pest Office of the establishment of direct mails between the two towns of Whangarei and Dar-gaville, as the result of agitation on the part of the Chan.her, was a matter for gratification. WAIRUA FALLS. After correspondence had been read, the Chairman and Mr Crano reported what had been done .at tbo meeting Tield earlier in. the day; the latter gentleman referring to the tardy, yet generous, acceptance of the Chamber's standing, which their invitation to the Conference implied. RAILWAY LEAGUE MEETING AT PALMERSTON. The Chairman and Mr Hcmpton reported as to the action taken in regard to the meeting' oi delegates -from North Island Chambers to be held at Palmerston on the 24thy and on the motion of Mr Weaver the ■sending of. Mr G. Bull to represent the Whangarei , Chamber was approved, ADVERTISING COMMITTEE. Correspondence was road, and! at the request of Mr Crane this committee was authorised in regard to •oertain matters as desired. Prints of suitable views of the TVhangarei and surrounding! districts for inclusion in the booklet "Hints for Home Seekers in the North" were also shown. GRASSING GUM LANDS. Mr Baylis' report not -having come to hand., the Secretary was askod to institute inquiries re same. DREDGING THE WHANGAREI RIVER. Mr Drummond urged the importance of this work to the town, and hence to the business community of Whangarei, anil .he contended that the extra shilling of wharfage , should be expended on the work for which it was intended when imposed', namely, dredging. He dwelt on the itreir. endoiis importance to the town of the deepening of our waterway, and with much force he instanced that the makdng of shore improvements to the river at the present stage of affairs was like erecting station buildings before ithe line- of railway to use the same was constructed. Mr Marshall moved that a ' commitSv tee consisting of Messrs Drummonri, Roberts, and Grier, with power to add, wait on the Harbor Board in regard to the dredging of the river between the Town wharf and Limeburners' Creek. Mr Weaver seconded, and after an interesting discussion the motion avus unanimously adopted. At a later stage, on the suggestion of Mr IT. J. Bray, the nia'Uoi: c>3 the erection of a at Busby Head was also to be brought under the notice of the Board. ACCOUNTS. felt that the very successful nature of the trip more, than justified, the heavy expenditure. The Chairman, who expressed regret at having been absent from Whangarei at the time, mentioned that there was a general feeling as to the success of the visit, while; future benefit would undoubtedly accrue to the district therefrom. MEMBERS' SUBSCRIPTIONS. The President and Secretary were authorised to take action towards getting, members to pay up any subscriptions in arrears, as otherwise the Chamber's usefulness might be checked. A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded an interesting, mooting at 'J. 30 p.m.
