It is stated that the German * Con-sul-General has been instructed by cable to represent to the Commonwealth Government, in the most friendly way, that the announcement of the proposed new surtax on foreign goods has been received in commercial circles in Germany with anxiety and indignation, and that the German Government, white deprecating any attempt to influence the policy of the Commonwealth, fears it may be compelled to take measures that would have the effect of interfering with the mutual commercial relations of Germany and Australia.
