Death of Mrs J. Edwards. A Peaceful End.

It is with the greatest regret that we are compelled to announce the death of one of the oldest and most highly respected residents in this district, in the person of Mrs J. Edwards, of Waikaraka, who passed peacefully and painlessly away at her late residence about 8.30 p.m. yesterday. Mrs Edwards had reached an unusually advanced age, being 94 at the time of her decease. Though for some years past the deceased lady had shown signs of increasing physical failure, yet she retained her intellectual faculties clear and undimmed to the last. Mrs Edwards came to the Colony with her husband in the year 1859, in the sailing ship Harwood. The family settled at Waikaraka a few weeks after arrival, and have been resident there ever since, for a period of 47 years. Mrs Edwards' long life has been accompanied by pronounced Christian principles, and her unbounded hospitality has ever been in great repute. A husband, two sons, and two daughters are left to lament their irreparable loss, and we desire to join our heartfelt sympathy with the very large number of the late Mrs Edwards' friends throughout the neighbourhood. The funeral will leave the house at 3 p.m. to-morrow (Sunday) for the Graham town Cemetery, Avhere the funeral obsequies will be conducted by the Rev. J. H. Hawkes. It has been arranged that Mr Patterson's oil launch shall leave the Whangarei Town Wharf at 11 o'clock to-morrow morning, for the convenience of any local residents, who may wish to attend the funeral.
