Bruce one of the English missionaries murdered in China was an Australian labouring in China since 1896 nt Cheuchow missionary .station recently re-opened after the Boxers' rising. These murders do not imply a renewal of anti-foreign movement they are attributed to local superstition. When the .outbreak commenced the missionaries declined the Prefect's invitation, to shelter at Yamien preferring to remain at the Mission Station. The gunboat Snipe was sent to Oheuchow.
