The Fisheries Act Amendment Bill and New Zealand University Bill both passed their first 9tages. HOUSE OF KEPBESENTATIVES. The House met »t 2.30. I Mr Duncan gave notice to more that a select committee, consisting of two members, be set up to inquire into the frozen meat export trade and prices obtained in both islands. The Mines Committee recommended that the Coal Mines Act Amendment Bill be allowed to proceed, subject to certain amendments, the first of which was a proposal to strike out the clauses fixing the hours of miners as eight "from bank to bank." Mr Guiness protested against this proposal, and moved that the Bill be referred back j to the committee for reconsideration of ! those clauses. After considerable discussion the motion was agreed to on the voices. The Joint Stock Committee recommended that the Bill be withdrawn this session and amended, and a subcommittee be set up to consider how best to effect the object aimed at in the Bill. ■; On the motion that the Bill be" referred back to the Committee for reconsideration. Mr Duncan said if he was Minister of Agriculture next session he would bring the Bill up again. After considerable discussion the motion was rejected. It was decided that on and after Wednesday next all Government bumness ehall take precedence on Wednesday. Wellington, August 27. The House met at 7. 30. Local Authorities Indemnity Bill, the Second Hand Dealers Bill passed their final stages in committee. On the Government Bail way Superanuation Fund Bill, considerable discussion took place. In answer to a question, Sir J. Ward said that the Bill as it came back from the select committee did not propose any contribution from the state, unless in the event of a deficiency 0f "75 per cent. In regaid to casual hands in the workshops, if they were to be put on the permanent list, and would therefore come into this Bill, they could if they elected, contribute. All branches of the railway service had agreed to the Bill. Sir J. Ward also said, he would look into the question of contingents. In regard to the service of casual hands who were put on Uie permanent staff, an ammendent was itiserted, providing thatif acontributor be dismissed for misconduct he shall be entitled to the refund of the whole amountactually contributed by him, to the fund, but without interest/ The retnaininir clauses were passed without material ; amendment, and the Bill was then »«- *J ported. • v : .
