SYDNEY, December 2, A serious fire began to-night at Gibbs, Bright, and Co.'s Wharf, Darling Harbour. Their kerosene bond, containing thirty thousand cases, equal to a quarter of n miHioii gallons of oil, ciiught 15re, und was soon completely demolished. The burning oil spread all over the wharf, most of which was burned. Some large piles of timber are on fire, but there is no danger of the blaze spreading to adjoining property. Th« fire is still burning, but is under loutrol. The damage is estimated at f 50,000. The amount. of insurance is at present unknown. When this fire was at its height it presented a grand spectacle, huge bodies of flame and dense clouds of smoke iisin» in the air. Melbourne, December 2. A terrible tiagedy took place near Dorlesford to-day. A man named Avison, suspecting his wife of infidelity, returiiod home unexpectedly and found her paramour, a iiiun named H<are, in the house. Avison attacked him savagely with a tomahawk, which bo drove several times into his head, and was only prevented from killing his wife by the intervention of a friend. Ham- is dying.
