OUR RAILWAYS.
Mr Vaile lias resolved, at last to bring his theories on this subject to actual experiment, and has proposed to the Government a plan for leasing, for five years, the Auckland Railway's for that purpose. He appears to be backed by friends who are willing to bind themselves, to pay into the Treasury not less than the railways earnings during the past year of 1887-8. Althmigh we -have grave doubts of the financial success of the experiment, should it come to pass, yefc it is a scheme which must, if carried out in its entirety, work an astonishing revolution in the country. The proposed uniform rate for lonj or short distances would effect this. This would cause* country properties to rise and suburban properties would fall, for the producer of fruit and grain would be, commercially, so far as frieght and transit are concerned, on equality with those nearer towns, if they happened to live within easyreach of a station. The offer of Mr Vaile and hia frienda is a bold one; and exhibits the profoundness of their faith in the scheme. It isquestionable, however, if the Government will accede to the proposal.
