The Northern Advocate.

Fbom our cablegrams it will be seen that the European Press are almost unanimous in predicting peace for some time. Not only the Press, but one of the leading military authorities in Russia, gives it as his opinion that J the war cloud has passed away for at I least two years. The feeling of security that this news gives to [ Europe and the world generally will materially assist in removing depression, commerce will expand, civilization advance, and statesmen can turn their attention to the internal affairs of their respective countries. The firmness of the wool market should encourage our farmers to increase their flocks especially in this province where such a length of staple can be grown without a break or fault. The American manufacturers are large buyers of longwool in London, and in all probability the present duty on wool levied by the States will be, if not altogether abolished, considerably reduced. If such be the case our longwool will be worth from 25 to 30 per cent, more value. There is no climate in the world better adapted for j>hg growth of a long staple than the North Island of New Zealand. Our sheep are not snowed up in winter, nor sare<:5 are< : they without water in summer, .the only evils therefore to guard against is over stocking, and faulty breeding. The tariff has passed in the main, the Government cannot be congratulated on it, as it was one of their platform promises that taxation should not be increased, and as for being a protection tariff it is nothing of the kind. It neither pleases protectionists or freetraders, and is merely for revenue raising purposes.
