BUTTER FOR THE HOME MARKET.

Wollonoong dairy farmers are jubilant over the cablegram received from Sir Saul Samuel and published in the Daily Telegraph to. the effect that about one ton of butter per the Orient Company's steamer Orizaba had arrived in England in good condition, and had just sold in a depressed market at the wholesale price of 112s. r porcwt. This trial shipment was made by the South Coast and West Camden Co-operative Company, who have forwarded similar shipments every fortnight since by the Orient steamers, about 20 tons having been exported up to the present time. The butter was packed in Pond'B patent boxes and stored during the voyage in the cool chambers of the steamers. With the introduction of butter j factories throughout all the dairying centres, by which butter of uniform quality is made, the dairy-farmers here are now satisfied that that article can be placed upon the home market in good marketable condition. During the summer months the Sydney market has always been glutted with butter, which has been sold at 4d and 5d per lb. When freight and agent's charges have been deducted there has been very little left for the producer. With the establishment of a regular export trade, the market can be regulated and the producers obtain : fair prices fh: their product. Thia is a matter of vital importance to the dairy farmers of the South Coast district, who will be benefited to an immense extent by the success of the

project. With a view of extending their operations in this-, and otb er

directions, the shareholders of tlie South Coast and West Oamden Cooperative Company held a meeting on Thursday last and decided to incre? ise their capital to £50,000. The Ori< 3nt Company offer every facility for the placing of the butter upon the- ho une market in the best possible conditi on, and it is confidently expected that la jge quantities will in future be esparted by every steamer during the sum; mer months. Some such organize -tion should be attempted here, affording an outlet for bur glut.
