WHANGAEEI COUNTY COUNCIL.

SPECIAL MEETING. The special meeting of the Council was held on "Wednesday. Present : Crs. Thompson (chairman), M. McLeod, D. McLeod, Miller, Wh imp, EosS, McKay and Hunter.' The . minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, when, on the motion of Cr. McLeod, seconded by Cr. Ross, it was resolved, "That the Special Order adopted at the last meeting of the Council be now confirmed." ORDINABY MEETING. The minutes of the ordinary previous meeting were then confirmed and correspondence read. CHARITABLE AID. A letter was read from a village settler named Webb, soliciting relief. This : appears to he a had case. Webb, with his family of wife and nine children took up a village section at Hukerenui, and, on arriving on the land found it swamp and under water, so that he could do nothing with it. He made a tent of old sacks in which the family lived, but exposure and damp brought on fever, which went through the family, and one child died, the fathers health being in a very precarious' state. Considerable discussionensued, from which it appeared that,if the, family stayed, in the district, six months, they would become a permenant charge on the district, under the " Charitable Aid " regulations. Cr. Miller said that, the chairman should be requested to ■ relievo present necessities, •and moved, "That the pas-

sages of the Webb family be paid to Auckland." Seconded by Cr. Hunter and carried. The clerk was instructed to forward , Webb's letter and foregoing resolution to Mr Ballance. Boyd's application for relief was deferred to next meeting, An application made by Mr Vyle, ; Chairman of the late Otaika Road Board, : that ,£8 to the credit of that Board when \ merged into the County, be used for the '. purpose of ploughing, clearing, and planting Otaika school grounds, was ] granted.
