The oldest policy on the books of|the Australian Mutual Provident Society has just become a chum. The policy, which was the fourth issued by the Society, is dated 28th of February, 1849, and is for £260. The annual premium was £6 18/4, and was paid for 38 years, making a total paid of £262 16/8. Glenelg wOl leave Whangarei for Auckland on Saturday evening, May 7th ; the train leaves for the wharf at 5.25 p.m. This is owing to the fact that the Wellington is to be docked on arrival at Auckland to-day for cleaning purposes, and the Glanelg is to come here in her place. Not only was 'the " Observer's " correspondent wrong, as we stated in our last issue, in imputing dishonour to the Northern Jockey Club, but it has also just come to our knowledge, that it was wrong in respect tothepayment of the stakes for the Waipu Hurdles, as Pomari Kmgihos not as yet received them. The " Observers "praise and censure are therefore valueless. "To what base uses are we come," i indeed, when the columns of a journal are so prostituted.
