PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.

Tite Eev. B. Hutson officiated on Sunday last in the Whangarei Church, morning and evening, also at Kaurihohore in the afternoon ; and, notwithstanding the short notice and inclement weather, the attendance was very fair. In the evening the Whangaroi Church was filled enough to be comfortable. Mr Hutson is about to occupy the pulpits for the next few Sundays in the different Presbyterian Churches in the "Whangarei charge, and it is not improbable he may receive a call to be stationed permanently hero. Prizes were distributed by Mr Dixon, Assistant Superindent, to those children who had successfully competed at' the quarterly examinations last year. minutes much excited, and stated that her father had been killed by a tree which struck him on the head. One of the members of the family was immediately despatched to tie township ; but when assistance arrived it was found that life was quite extixct from the frightful injuries which deceased had received to the head ; and, frdn the position in which the body was atuated when found, it was quite evideit that death was instantaneous. Deceased was one of the pioneer settlers of thej Paparoa district, and was much respecied by all who knew hini for his genijl and manly qualities. Sincere sympathy is felt throughout the entire ieighbouxhood with the sorrowing fami^r in their sad bereavement. In the afternoon an inquest was held on thebodr before Mr TV. W. Ariel, coroner, and a jiry of six, viz., Messrs J. F. Evans (forenan), H. Barton V. A. Birt, O. C. Haines.jT. Slator, and A. Mcßae. After a fey minutes deliberation the jury returied a verdict of " accidental death." The funeral was largely attended. ' The election of County Councillors for the new County of Otan&tea is now over. Mrß. T. Birt has been; elected for the Mareretu riding, and Mi- W. W. Ariel, J. P., for the Paparoa riding.
