Denniston Disputes Committee
At a recent meeting of the 'above Committee, "Mr.' T. "Whittle representing the Union, Air. W. McCormack the employers, and Mr. G. B. Sinclair presiding, the following questions were decided: — Question 1: What is the definition of a pillar? Answer: A block of coal detached from th*. solid shall constitute a pillar. A pillar shall be deemed to be detached where not more t'nan four (4) feet of bottom coal has been left on in the first workings. Questions (The Splits): Should solid rates be. paid for the first split, where the pillars had been split prior to the present award? Answer: Decided by Disputes Committee that solid rates be pajd for first split through a pillar during the remainder of the present-award, whether the pillar had been split prior to the present award. The above findings are now applicable to the Stockton Mine (and should apply to all mines covered by the Westland Award), but were only agreed upon on June 12, after a period of more than three months. This was settled without being referred to the Court. The other case, settled outside the Court, was the rate for. the pumpmen. All cases taken Jtq the Court were decided in' the enaployers' favour. ... ,
