Shop Trades Federation
Discussing with a daily press reporter the movement now afoot to form a Federation of all shop employees' Unons, Mr. A. W. Crockery, secretary of the Operative Butchers' Federation, said that for many years past the various shop assistants' organisations had been considering the question of forming one Dominion Federation. "In. their own interests, such a Federation is considered essential/ said Mr. Croskery, "In. view of ths fact that the workers are partially covered by awards of the Arbitration- , Court, and partially by statutory legislation, namely, the Shops and Offices Act. Instead of having: numerous separate bodies, it is considered that it would be more satisfactory to have one organisation which could- speak with a united voice on proposed legislation dealing with shop trade workers. It Is also felt that encroachments are being made by the Government, at the instigation of the employ-,■ ers , associations throughout the Dominion, on the privileges of eiiop as>; slstants, and for this reason, also, it: is urged that there should be one Fede ration to "-protect the interests of all; shop assistants. If we had a Dominion Federation of all workers In the.
■shop trades, we should be able to speak with no uncertain voice on mat-
ters of common concern."
