The Elections.

Robertson Carries Otaki.

A NEW POLITICAL ERA.

Lessons of the Election.

The Ward Government Jaas met its deserts. The result of Thursday's second ballots prove that the people are heartily sick of a sham Liberalism which 'has got out of touch with the aspirations of the people. The results are due, not to love of Massey and his band of political reactionaries, but to disgust with the failure of the Ward. Government to express the spirit of democracy. The dry bones of Liberalism have received a severe shaking, and the warning is plain. The country for the past five years has been governed by a btireaucracy without a policy worth the name, whose sole desire was to keep itself in office. Many causes conspired to defeat the Government. Its notorious weakness on the land question, which has been persistently shelved; its failure to consult the people on the subject of the Dreadnought .gift, and the defence problem said the foisting of a hereditary aristocracy on the country were resented by a majority of the electors.

and a political beginner, .wrested the scat from a man with strong local -influence and interests, and the Government mana behind him. Labor, toe, lias improved its position immensely, and for the first time commands rospect as a political entity. The future will be full of interest. To the Socialists and democrats of Maoriland the elections of 1911 are a healthy aign of the times, betokening a growing interest of the people in their own affairs and a set-back to government by delegation. The day of the old political parties is dying, and Socialism, the Spirit of the Ago, is dawning on the horizon. THE NEW HOUSE. The new Parliament .will contain a larger number of political .novices than any since the Liberal Government assumed power. Below is a summary of the parties and constituencies. Members of last Parliament are denoted by an asterisk, and those who won on a second ballob by a dagger . Socialist (1). Otaki —fJ. Robertson. Labor (3). Wanganui—tW. A. Veitch. Wellington South —tA.
