ROXBURGH DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

PARENTS’ DAY In order to afford parents the opportunity of seeing the work done by their children Friday afternoon, October 29, was set aside as Parents’ Day in the Roxburgh District High School. At 1 p.m. Messrs Richards and Morgan, representing the Otago Education Board visited the school and inspected the work on display. A large number of parents arrived at 2 p.m. and spent the first hour examining samples of work in the various rooms. In the Infant room was found an excellent display of handwork, writing, blackboard drawing and work in colour —a very creditable exhibit by the little people. There was also on display here an exhibition of the sewing done by the Primary girls, ample evidence of the sound training the girls are receiving in this division of . the Home Crafts course.

In Std I and II in addition to a fine display of general school activities, examples of project work in geography and numerous samples of book-binding created special interest. In Forms I and II room the woodwork models made during the year at the Manual Training centre provided a most interesting and enlightening exhibit. Here were to be found, bookshelves, dinner waggons, step ladders, cabinets, etc., of a very high order while in the centre of the room was a most attractive dinner table set with three seperate dinners of most appetising appearance, the work of Forms I and II girls’ Cooking Class. In the Secondary Department was to be found another excellent display. In addition to samples of the ordinary school work there were some very fine exhibits from the Home Crafts classes —trays, baskets, garments in wool, etc., and a series of dresses made by the secondary pupils in the dressmaking class, all very attractive and.of high quality workmanship. In the Laboratory there were some excellent samples of bookbinding, while several interesting chemical experiments provided further interest.

A massed Drill Display under the direction of Mr Webster then took place, pupils from Std I to Form VI taking part. This excellent demonstration was followed by a Rhythmic Display by the Infants, which provided one of the most popular items in a highly entertaining programme. The parents then adjourned to the Sunday School Hall where the (programme was opened with a part song, “The Ash Grove” rendered effectively by Std 3 and 4 and Forms I and II under the baton of Mr Rodger. This was followed, by Brahm’s “Slumber Song,” sung by June Steele, Pearl Wood, Elsie Stringer, and Agnes Gunn, and by “Sweet and Low” with Cliff Bennetts as soloist.

Prepared speeches on different phases of school work were then listened to with much interest. The introduction was given very capably by Louis Kerr followed by an outline of the causes of the Sino-Japanese conflict by Edmund Graham. A talk on Java from a “Trip to England’' was delivered in most interesting way by Alex Stringer and the subject of Literature was ably introduced by Pearl Wood, and illustrated by Nira Moore, Tana. Taylor, Elsie Stringer, and June Steele. The programme was concluded with two songs, “The Huntsman’s Chorus,” and “Vesper Hymn” rendered by the Secondary pupils with Leslie Jordan at the piano. The Headmaster, Mr H. Lotting, then thanked the parents for their attendance and interest in me school and its activities while Mr J. H. Waigth replied on behalf of the parents, expressing their appreciation of the splendid exhibition of work and commenting most favourably on the modern methods in evidence.

Afternoon tea, served by the staff and pupils, brought a most successful function to a close.
