CRICKET NOTES.

ROXBURGH v. EXCELSIOR (ALEXANDRA). On Saturday of last week the Roxburgh players played their first match for the 1934 season when the Excelsior Club from Alexandra, came down for a friendly match.' The rain experienced on Saturday morning had made the ground wet when play commenced, and the wicket was very tricky. For early in the season the match was a good on e and both clubs appear to have fairly strong teams. Excelsior bailed first and were all out for ! fit) runs after having only five wickets down for 58. ROXBURGH v. WANDERERS (INVERCARGILL). On Labour Day an enjoyable cricket match was played on the Roxburgh sports ground between a team brought up from Invercargill by Mr Doig, and the Roxburgh team. The weather was perfect, there being a glorious hot sun, which made conditions very pleasant for the players. Play commenced about 10.30 a.m. and concluded at 5 p.m. Roxburgh batted first and made a very poor start, there being at cue stage six wicket s down for 12 runs. Dempster and Black retrieved the position somev. hat and added 24 runs for the next wicket. The Bth wicket added another 17, but tihe las three wickets only put on four mere, and the whole side were out f« r 57—Dempster 13, and Black 10, being the only players to secure double figures. As the visitors had 12 players with them it was decided to play 12 men a side, to give them all a game. The visitors also started badly, the first wicket falling with only 1 run on. They did better from then on and when the lunch adjournment was taken five wickels wore down for 33. On resuming in the afternoon the visitors quickly collapsed and were all out for 53—four less than the Roxburgh score. Roxburgh began their second innings better and lad 18 runs on before the firs) wicket fell. When the afternoon tea adjournment was taken the score was 7 wickets for 49, and to enable the visitors to have a second knock the Roxburgh captain closed the innings. The visitors did far better in their second innings and when play ceased at 5 o’clock they had 63 on for the loss of four wickets. In the match the bowlers were always on top, all the batsmen showing want of practice. The visitors proved a fine lent of sports and their visit was keenly enjoyed by the local players.
