Mt. Burner Mail WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21,1934 Be just and fear not. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Mr J. S. Thompson, surgeon dentist, Dunedin, will visit Roxburgh professionally on Thursday, March 22, 1934, and may be consulted at the Commercial Hotel between 11.30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Very little interest was shown by the ratepayers in Roxburgh in the poll which was taken on Thursday of last week to borrow £ISOO to build a reservoir and improvements to the water supply. The number of votes recorded was 69,—not half of the available number of votes which could have been recorded. For the proposal there were 61 votes and 8 votes were recorded against it.

The stone fruit in this distrct is now nearing its finish and during the past week ending Saturday, March 17th, the amount of fruit consigned by rail from Roxburgh dropped down to 3,817 cases (54 tons 8 ewt 2 qrs) as against 9,563 cases (127 tons 4 cwt- 3 qrs) for the previous week. The largest daily load went forward on March 14th, when 1018 cases (13 tons 11 cwt. 3 qrs) were railed. Monday’s train of this week left wth 771 cases (11 tons 2 cwt., 2 qrs). The very commendable effort of the station master and staff of the local railway station in improving the amenities at the railway is one that might well be emulated by other public institutions as well Is private individuals of our district, and it is a matter for regret liat because of its comparative ■elation the present display of lowers at the station is not more lidely known and appreciated. A lisit to the railway at the present ■me is well worth while and to liose who have not been there for lime time the great alteration I'hicli has taken place in the surl.undings will he a source ol pleasure and surprise to them, The Irab surroundings common to all Imntry stations have been relievm by iiower plots, which are now ■blaze of colour, and great credit ■ due to Mr Douthet? and his staff ■r the work which they have put With very little previous

wledge of flowers and their ivation they set themselves the task of transforming: what was nothing more than a "ravel bed. into a flower garden, and the success of their efforts may he seen today in the bright coloured flowers which now adorn the platform There are several beds, each containing numerous showy annuals and perennials, and the wealth oi bloom and colour is evidence of the enthusiastic care and attention tliat has been bestowed on them. At present the beds are being extended and it is hoped that the results next season will be belter still. Needless to say the staff is very proud of its effort and will appreciate any advice or gifts of flower plants.

It is reported that Mr Colin (iilray. Principal of the John MoGlashan College, Dunedin, has been appointed to the position of headmaster of Scotch College, Melbourne. Mr (lilray, who was one of New Zealand’s firs; Rhodes scholars. Inis had a very distinguished educational career and his removal will be a loss to the Dominion and Otago in particular.

Tlu* committee t»l thi! Tnapcka County Jockey Club are very well pleased with the nominations received for races on Easter Saturday and anticipate a good day's racing. Mr A, L. Canter, of Dunedin (gallops) and Mr C. Paul, Christchurch) (trots) will .announce the handicaps on Monday, The ground and track are in excellent condition. The management committee have decided to give all positions at the meeting (gate-men, and ticket sellers) to unemployed men.
