LIQUOR AT DANCES

SUPPLYING YOUNG GIRLS. DISCUSSION BY JUDGES, Auckland, March PL Drinking by young people, especially in cabarets, was discussed at length at this morning’s session oi tiiv Justices’ Federation. Introducing a remit that it should be made a criminal offence to supply liquor to females under 21, Mr A. 11. Hobbs (Canterbury) said girls were supplied all too frequently with liquor at dancer It would be a good thing if the ecnferenme indicated that it was not in sympathy with the hip pocket flask practice. In Christchurch he knew there was a good deal of giving of “spots” to girls, Mr D. Donaldson (Auckland); ‘ 1 am sorry to have to admit there is ample evidence in this city to -support the remit.” He criticised the control of drinking in cabarets, there being, he alleged, no effictive check on “spotting.” Mr K. McFarlane (Wanganui) pointed out that, although a girl could marry after the age of 16, it would be a criminal offence for her father to give her drink, oven in her own home. Cabaret “spotting” was what they wanted to eliminate. The president (Mr A. Rosser) said most of the “spotting” was in motor cars, and not in the cabarets.

The matter was deferred pending the redrafting of the resolution.

A recent applicant for a marriage license stated that in the womens column of a newspaper he had noticed the advocacy of wages for married women. That, he said, must have been written by a spinster, as married men, in most cases, bad nothing left after buying their tobacco and an occasional pint of three X. However, he had overcome the. difficulty by promising to give his future wife three-quarters of his food, which he thought was sufficient recompense to offer her for cooking the other aiiarter for linnaejf.
