Notes of the Day

The following tennis players will represent St. Brigid's Club, Feilding, against St. John's at the former club's courts this week-end at 1 p.m.—Ladies: D. Boswell, J. Scott, M. Morris, P. Moffitt; men: J. Brady, W. Williams, D. Morris, L. Morris. Pte. W. T. J. Wills of the hospital ship Maunganui who recently returned from the Pacific Islands on furlough which he spent with his wife in Feild* ing, has sailed in the ship for England. Sgt. B. T. Thompson, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Thompson, of Beattie Street, Feilding, is also on the staff of the ship. The Boys' Band from Feilding took part in the Massed Bands parade at Wanganui on Sunday, when some six brass and three pipe bands participated in a performance at Cook's Gardens. Bands from Palmerston North, Feilding and Hawera as well as Wanganui were represented.

Many smokers unable to obtain supplies of cigarettes or tobacco have given up suffering the experience of being told that their wants cannot be satisfied and have joined the ranks of non-smokers. According to the views of a number of citizens in Feilding the position has become intolerable and rather than submit to a cap in hand approach for a packet of “smokes" they have resolved to stop smoking.

Tomorrow the Feilding Methodist Women's Missionary Auxiliary is holding a Christmas fete in the Sunday school hall and grounds. The fete will be opened at 2.30 p.m. when various stalls including a Christmas gift stall will be open for business. There will be ice creams for the children, a treasure hunt and Christmas tree with a real Santa Claus in attendance. Admission to the fete: Adults 1/-, children 5 years and over, 6d. In response to enquiries made some weeks ago by the Feilding Borough Council, the town clerk has received advice from the Director-General of the P. & T. Department with reference to the proposed new post office for Feilding, that the working plans are nearing completion and it is hoped to call tenders shortly. It was pointed out that on account of the operation of priorities, buildings required by the Department have to bo considered along with those required by other Government Departments, local bodies and private interests. In the circumstances, it was not possible to indicate at present when the work would be commenced. The Department is anxious that the building be erected at the earliest possible date and the Council can be assured that everything possible was being done to have the work expedited.
