Boys’ and Girls’ Calf Club Judging

CHAMPIONSHIP GATHERING AT FEILDING The championship gathering at Feeding yesterday marked the close of another outstanding year in tho history of the Boys’ and. Girls’ Calf Club movement in tho Manawatu and Oroua. In fact, it was a record year with entries totalling 810 calves from the schools controlled by tho MauawatuOroua Division of the organisation which grew out of the Boys’ and Girls' Agricultural Club movement. For tho championship judging yesterday 67 calves wore paraded by their youthful and in some cases almost infant owners, along with 28 older animals. This represented the cream of the year’s competition being the placed calves in the different groups representing awards both for type and care in rearing. The observer could not escape tho conclusion that in the matter of care in rearing the calves had been in the lap of luxury because of the evidence of the feeding and grooming which every little calf displayed. It. was a great day for the children who had been up very early to prepare their charges for the show ring aud as the judging proceeded tho excitement of the experience kept the children awake while some of the calves manifested evidence of being tired. However, they apparently enjoyed being fussed about and were generally sleek and all contented.

The judge was Mr. Ray V. Brown, of "Wanganui, who early found that he had been presented with no light undertaking. Grouped about tho show ring were parents, relations and friends who followed with interest and no little speculation the movements of the judge who had an unenviable task. The calves proved to be a splendid lot and it was by no means easy to separate them. In the course of his remarks when commending the children upon the interest they had taken in their calves Mr. Brown told the children not to overdo the feeding. Some calves had been given too much milk and were not as sleek as the judge would have liked. Mr. W. E. Thomas acted as steward and Messrs. H. R. Green and J. H. Mason judged the ringcraft. Official visitors included Mr. Alexander, of the Department of Education, Wellington, and Mr. W. Mudford, of Foxton, representing the Wanganui Education Board. Mr. E. H.
