High-level Research Into Cosmic Rays

MOSCOW, Nov. 25. A Russian "flying laboratory" stratosphere balloon, known as U.S.S.R. 79, was aloft for 18 hours, and brought down what is reported to be valuable information on cosmic rays, registered on sensitive instruments. A Russian land expedition working on the rays has also returned from the Pamirs with photographic records of proton showers taken at a height of nearly 20,000 feet. The experiments have shown that relatively slow electrons and protons having a potential energy of a few million electron-volts play a significant role in the soft component of cosmic rays.
