Tramwaymen’s One-day Strike in Wellington

WELLINGTON, Nov. 27. No City Corporation trams or buses will rim in Wellington tomorrow. About 800 members of the Wellington Tramway Employee’s Union ceased work late tonight in terms of the union’s decision to declare a 24-hour strike in protest against withdrawal of the war loading bonus payment. Thousands of people dependent on the corporation services will have to find alternative means of transport to get them to and from work. Normal running will be resumed on Thursday morning. The trams and corporation buses completed their normal schedules tonight. The strike officially began when the night shift workers—cleaners, maintenance men and others who are due to begin work at 11 p.m.—did no ( t put in an appearance at the tram sheds and bus garages tonight. No negotiations took place today between the parties to the dispute—tne Wellington City Council and the union. The men’s demand for satisfaction of their claim for reinstatement of the bonus was not met by the Council by noon today, the time set by the tramwaymen at a general meeting on Sunday and the decision to strike tomorrow was carried out.
