FINE EXHIBITION OF STOCK AT Y.F.C. SHOW

Outstanding Display at Feilding Yesterday

The Feilding Young Earners’ Club had every reason to bo proud of its efforts to promote interest in good live stock, and should be congratulated on the fine show they had staged, said the club’s patron, Air. W. 11. Henson, when he declared the show open yesterday. He was very pleased to learn that there were 15 clubs in tho Alanawatu area and he hoped they would receive the support they deserved. In thanking the members of the public, the organisors and exhibitors for the support they had given, Air. A. C. Buist (vice-president) said that the outstanding success of the show was directly attributable to the work of all concerned. Massey College Exhibit. The wide range of technical work and instruction being carried out at Alassey Agricultural College had its reflection in a well-arranged display by the College. Though prominence was given to horticulture, a table devoted to general farming, represented by means of photographs and actual exhibits, many of the activities of lecturers, research w'orkers, and students. These were set out on stalls having attractively-col-oured cloths as backgrounds. Something of the architectural beauty of the College buildings and appointments has been caught by the camera. Alongside these photographs were others of more or less specialised work on the sheep and dairy farms. Some prominence was given to the 11-year-old bull Tokaora Domini Asjes, which still heads the College Friesian herd; and which, of all bulls surveyed by the New Zealand Dairy Board, gave the best results, with an average production of 4321 b. fat for 17 daughters, compared with 4201 b. fat for their 17 dams, all calculated on a maturity basis. A reminiscence of the Newr Zealand Veterinary Association’s conference held recently at the College, was contained in the photograph of a demonstration there, by one of Dr. Stacder’s co-work-ers at tho University of Pennsylvania, of the now Staeder splint, which through being bolted through the ends of tho fractured bones, can give an animal or human being free use of the limb after three days. The wool section included samples of two highpriced clips, a book of wool samples as made up by all the sheep-farming students, and a cross-section of wool fibres, magnified 500 times, showing tlie evenness and great differences in the diameter of good and poor wools. The comprehensive horticultural exhibit was divided into three sections: Plant propagation, commercial growing, and items of botanical interest. Various methods of propagation were shown such as rhododendron and conifer grafting, and the propagation of plants from leaf, root, or seem cuttings. Budding was also dealt with. 'Evidence that the College’s horticultural course places emphasis on the commercial aspects was seen in three types of crops: Greenhouse, other softwood material, and trees and shrubs; all of which covered nursery management and the cut-flower industry, in which trees and shrubs, bulbous plants, perennials and annuals are dealt with.

Among the items of botanical interest with economic uses were coffee, pandanus, and tea plants. Pandanus is particularly interesting, as it is the plant from which fibre for sugarbags is obtained. It is found throughout tho Pacific Islands and other* tropical countries, and has a New Zealand counterpart in Freycinetra banksii, commonly known to New Zealanders as kie kie. Also on display w'ere the Pereskia cactus, tho only cactus wfliich has a true leaf, and Diffen bachia picta, a Pacific Island plant used by the natives for poisoning arrows.
