Major Political Issue In Sweden
Deportation of Balts To Russian Zone (By T:’c-graph—Press Assn. —Copyright.) Received Monday, 7.5 p.m. LONDON, Nov. 26. A number of Balts who are included in a draft of men from the Wehrmacht who are to be deported to the Russian zone in Germany have become the subject of a major political issue in Sweden, says the Associated Press’ Stockholm correspondent. The Balts began hunger-striking on November 22 and many are already becoming weak. Conservatives and Liberals, also many non-political groups, have protested to the Government.
More than 15,000 persons yesterday demonstrated outside the Royal Palace against the deportation of the Balts, says the Daily Telegraph's Stockholm correspondent. Prayers for the refugees were offered in the churches. The authorities have taken the refugees’ threats of mass suicide seriously and have removed all water glasses from the train carrying the men to the port. The correspondent says it is believed that the Government does not intend to change its decision to accede to Russia’s request.
