Greek Regent Withdraws Resignation

Received Monday 10.10 p.m. ATHENS, Nov. 26.

The Regent’s office issued a statement announcing that Archbishop Damaskinos withdrew his resignation following a personal appeal from Mr. McVeagh, the United States Ambassador, and a further personal message from Mr. Bevin.

Mr. Bevin is stated to have told the Regent that his insistence on resigning would cause ‘‘terrible disappointment to the British people and Parliament,” and drew attention to the consequences the resignation would have on Greece. Mr. McVeagh is quoted as saying that the resgnation would have ‘‘a most unhappy effect on public opinion in the United States.” The statement added that the Regent therefore withdrew his resignation, especially as the period during which he was required to continue his duties, should be brief, lasting as previously announced, only until the general elections. The new Greek Prime Minister, Mr. Sul'oulis, has given way as leader of the Liberal Party to a former Prime Minister, Colonel Venizelos.

Reports from Athens announced the dissolution, of its free will, of the Royalist group, but a new political party has taken its place. Foreign Minister Sofianopoulos described as unfounded a report that the Greek Ambassador to London is being recalled for consultation.
