Situation in Bandoeng Reported Tense
Received Thursday, 10.55 p.m. BATAVIA, Nov. 22. The situation in Bandoeng is reported to be tense. A British communique stated that, after a prolonged period of comparative quiet, there is now a serious outbreak of unrest there. Allied officers reported that the Indonesians in Bandoeng were making determined efforts to interfere with Rapwi work. At least a score of Indonesians have been killed in the Batavia fighting in the past 24 hours. Unrest is reported from several other Javanese cities. The Netherlands News Agency reports that 1500 Indonesian dwellings were burned down by a fire which raged early yesterday in Batavia’s native quarter. The casualties were light because most of the population fled after the shooting incidents last night. The Indonesians allege that the Dutch caus'ed the fire and shot Indonesians trying to escape.
