Veterans’ Golf Tourney Concludes
SPEECHLEY AND WHITEMAN WON BIG EVENTS.
The veterans’ tournament was concluded at the Manawatu Golf Club’s Hokowhitu course yestorday after three days of ideal weather. Yesterday’s programme consisted of the final games in tho cup, rose bowl, group and flights, and for players not engaged there was a four-ball bogey handicap. L. F. Spcechley, of Manawatu, and P. Whiteman, of Feilding, won the principal events, and O. W. Bamfield, from New Plymouth, the First Group. The tournament concluded at mid-day and the final event was the prize-giv-ing cereAiony at the club-house. Mr. N. A. Nash, a vice-president of the Manawatu Golf Club, officiated. Before presenting the trophies Mr, Nash said that as far as he could gather the tournament had been an enjoyable one. He promised that it -would not be the last Veterans’ tournament at Hokowhitu and that the course would be still further improved before next year. Mr. G. H. Scott, of Miramar, returning thanks on behalf of the visitors, complimented the club on the magnificent condition of the course and on tho manner in which the tournament had been conducted. Colonel J. G. Hughes, C.M.G., D. 5.0., of Miramar, also tendered his thanks and congratulations. The tournament was run by Mr. W. M. Horton and Mr. Fred Cousins of tho committee, and Mr. Eric Mabin, the club captain did all they could to raako the tournament an enjoyable one for the visitors. Manawatu Veterans’ Cup. L. F. Moore (Manawatu) beat K. A. Goldingliam (Manawatu). Group 2. J. G. Swainson (Pahiatua) beat G. Pat tie (Manawatu). Four-ball Bogey. L. R. Curtis (New Plymouth) and F. G. Bevan (Wanganui) 4 up. A. Kennedy and N. V. Ballinger (Manawatu) 2 up.
