Order of Priority for Rangitane Bridge
The Minister of Works (Hon. R. Semple) communicated through Mr. L. G. Lowry, M.P., a reply to recent representations mado conjointly by tho Opiki branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union and the Horowhenua County Council regarding the erection of a new bridge over the Manaivatu River at Rangitane. It was stated in the representations that tho Minister had informed local residents that the Rangitane bridge was third on the list of new bridges, and as the Whirokino and Rangitikei have already been provided for, it was desired to know if there was any prospect of any action being taken in the near futuro in regard to the Rangitane bridge. The Minister pointed out in his communication that work on the Rangitikei bridge had only recently been put in hand, and it was not expected that it would be completed until well into next year. He was hot able to say at present when the Rangitane bridge would be started, but when the Rangitikei bridge is further advanced the matter would again be considered, taking into account its relative priority. He pointed out that there were several bridges on the State highway between Wellington and Levin which must have a very high order of priority.
It was resolved by the Horowhenua County Council yesterday to receive the communication and to refer its contents to the Opiki branch of the Farmers’ Union.
