Linen Flax Needs
BRITAIN ABOUT TO OPEN NEGOTIATIONS LONDON, Nov. 7. The British Flax Controller, Mr. John Ferrier, announced that Britain is about to open negotiations with Australia and New Zealand for her requirements of linen flax from the 1946 crops. Mr. Ferrier said that Britain received from Australia during the war 5770 tons of flax and 750 tons of tow, and from New Zealand 4680 tons of flax and 2780 tons of tow. He listed the more important items produced from flax during the war as follows: 54,000,000 square yards oi aeroplane fabric, 25,000,000 square yards of heavy canvas, 75,000,000 yards of linen covers for general purposes, 35,000,000 yards of canvas and duck, 9,000,000 yards of linen packing and scrum, 26,000,000 miles of flax hose pipe, and 20,000 miles of parachute webbing.
