Catchment Board’s Proposals Opposed

When the Manawatu County Council met at Sanson yesterday two letters from the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council and the Manawatu Catchment Board w T erc received acknowledging the protest of the council against the proposals of the Catchment Board for flood control in the 1 ower Manawatu. The protest had been lodged by the chairman of the County Council (Clr. R. Craig), who drew attention to the liability which the council was asked to accept in connection with the proposed new bridge over the Shannon Road, estimated to cost £45,000. The proposed river cut would cut the Shannon Road and a new bridge was proposed and the Catchment Board in its proposals had suggested that in view of the benefits which would accrue to the land the cost of tho birdge should be carried by the Main Highways Board and the local body. It was stated that the Manawatu County share of the cost of the proposed bridge would be £12,000 and the council unanimously agreed to confirm the chairman’s protest against the proposals.
