Napier Girl Wins Music Club Scholarship
Eighteen young pianists of 12 years and under 14 played before Mr. H. E. Gunter last evening for the piano scholarship inaugurated by the Palmerston North Music Club, the competitors coming from as far away as Wanganui arid Napier, also Woodville, Feilding, Levin and Palmerston North. The test pieces were Mendelssohn’s Lieder Ohne Worte No. 14, and Watz in B Minor (Chopin), and the winner was Barbara New, Napier, who was congratulated by the adjudicator on a very nice performance. After announcing the winner Mr. Gunter gave some helpful nints and pointed out that the greatest fault that evening had been muddled pedalling but said he had been very pleased with many of the presentations. Opportunity was taken by Miss Evelyn Rawlins (president) to welcome Mr. Gunter (the club’s patron) as an authority on pianoforte music. She mentioned that the club owed its existence to Mr. Gunter’s love of music and his desire to foster a love in the lives of young musicians. Prom a membership of 20 the club could now boast of 120 both active and honorary. Miss Rawlins voiced her appreciation of the entries and the interest shown and said the occasion marked an important milestone in the club’s history.
