Feilding Aims At A Really Joyous Celebration

PROGRAMME FOR VICTORY FNT PACIFIC Over the week-end the Mayor of Feilding (Mr. T. L. Seddon) in consultation with other interests, drew up a programme for the joyous celebration of Victory in the Pacific and this was published in yesterday’s issue of the “Times” as it was felt that the public should have some early intimation of what will be attempted to mark the surrender of the Nipponese. Yesterday several town interests gathered at the Borough Council Chambers to discuss the programme after wihch with a few minor alterations, it was approved. The fact that the Drill Hall had been engaged for at least two dances this week was mentioned in view of the inclusion in the programme of a Victory dance. The Mayor felt that those concerned in the two gatherings would be prepared to give way to the holding of the Victory dance should the evening fixed for the dance clash with the A.T.C. or the Convent School fixture. In the absence of definite information on the point the meeting was unable to go beyond the published programme which fixes the Victory dance for the evening of the second day of the celebrations. During the discussion it was suggested that it might be possible to combine the Victory dance with the Convent School dance but several speakers thought that this would not prove satisfactory and while it would no doubt interfere with the school programme it would also prevent the Victory dance patrons from participating in the revels which the celebrations are bound to inspire. The question of making satisfactory adjustments was left in the hands of the council sub-committee to finalise. A special point was made as to decorations and it was agreed that all business interests should employ all the bunting at their command as well as greenery to decorate the town. Several speakers recalled what happended in this connection wffien peace in the Great War was celebrated and the feeling was that every citizen should do all possible to provide for the utmost decoration. It is hoped that there will also be a general effort to provide for decorated vehicles for the processions. Everybody is invited to take part in this and no doubt the young people will wish to stage something -which will make for joy and merriment. Two processions are planned, one during the day, commencing at 1 p.m. and the other in the evening, commencing at 7 p.m. Dancing in the square at night together with community singing and concert numbers is planned and for this loud speakers will be installed and amplyfiers also to assist in helping the music and singing. It is hoped to obtain the services of the an orchestra as well as the Municipal Band. Considerable thought has been given to entertainment for the children. A sports x>rogranime on Kow r hai Park is planned but this, in view of the weather conditions, is likely to be transferred to Kimbolton Road adjacent the Square. The Feilding Amateur Athletic Club has undertaken to provide the programme. The children will also be given flags and a free picture show with appropriate programmes has been assured. The clergy have approved of the programme for the Thanksgiving service which will take place at 10 a.rn. if the news is received after midday and not 11 a.m. as advertised. The Rev. Clarence Eaton will deliver the Thanksgiving address following the address by th.e Mayor. Following the consideration of the programme it was gathered that Feilding hopes to celebrate “with the lid off” and it is expected that the near-by countryside will associate with the local celebrations. The hope is that bells, sirens and whistles will sound and no doubt other suitable noises will be conjured up to stir the two clays into one of joyous celebration.
