Petrol for Celebrations

(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, August 13. In connection with Victory celebrations, Mr. Sullivan (Miuister of Supply and Munitions) stated to-day that there would bo special petrol allowances for those desiring to attend celebrations where there was no suitable public transport, though it was felt that tho coupon allowance should meet the requirements of the majority. District controllers had been instructed to give sympathetic consideration to applications where no alternative transport was available, also to applications for temporary licenses from passenger service operators to carry the public to tho celebrations. The Government was particularly desirous that all school children should have an opportunity to take part in the festivities. LONDON, August 13. Lieut.-Commander E. O. Gidden, tho first man bolding the G.C., G,M. and 0.8. E., won the G.C. for cold-blooded heroism when in 1942 he drew the fuse from a bomb near Charing Cross after six hours of perilous work. The bomb clock was ticking over the last seconds as the fuse was drawn. The War Office was threatened and was evacuated while he worked.
