RACING AT RICCARTON. (Special to “Times.”) CHRISTCHURCH, August 12. The big crowd at Riccarton for the second day of the Grand National meeting was in excellent spirit after the receipt of the early morning war news and in every way patrons found the day one of the most enjoyable spent at C.J.C. headquarters. The weather was line and at times sunny but the going was much softer than on the opening day. The Grand National Hurdle Race was won in good style by tho favourite, Arabian Night, who very definitely turned the tables on Good Armour who had beaten him narrowly at Trentham. Lord Darnley ran a good third to Sphere and Amorlad in the Islington Handicap and might have won had he not been left in front from the start with the result that he had to do all the pacemaking. Dauber had little difficulty in winning the Lincoln Steeplechase in which Foxiana made one of his few mistakes. Only three of the seven starters in the Hunt Cup completed the course. Red Glare was in front most of the way jumping well and outclassing tho poor opposition and at one stage of the contest he and Edward were the only two left in the race. Edward had no chance with Red Glare especially after lie had made a bad jump toward the end of the journey.

DARBY MUNRO TO RIDE SLEEPY FOX.

Darby Munro, regarded by many racegoers as Australia’s premier [jockey, has been engaged to ride the New Zealand star, Sleepy Fox, in his first Australian race. This will be either the weight-for-age Warwick Stakes of seven furlongs at Randwick on August 25 or the weight-for-age Canterbury Stakes of six furlongs run a week later. If Munro is satisfied with the horse’s form he will ride him in his other Sydney engagements. FIVE OUT OF SEVEN. LONDON, August 12. The champion jockey Gordon Richards won five of the seven races at Salisbury, including two odds-on chances, yesterday. He received a terrific ovation from the crowd, which stayed behind to specially pay tribute.
