Oustanding Success of Convent School Ball

Tho George Street ballroom presented a colourful spectacle on Friday evening when pupils of the Convent Schools assembled for their annual ball. Hundreds of beautifully dressed children took the floor for the opening grand march going through all the figures with nice precision and striking a patriotic note by the waving of the flags of the Allies finishing before the sound shell to sing the National Anthem. In the charm of the costumes, it was evident the parents had spared no effort to present each child as a living or story book character. -There were people of all nations, representatives of the services, fairy folk, and favoured story book characters. A varied programme was entered into with gay abandon opening with a delightful Polonaise which was one of the most pleasing demonstrations seen at any schohol ball this winter and it was evident that much care and thought had gone into the training. The function was opened by Mr. F. G. Murphy, chairman of the school committee, who returned thanks to Sister Mary Bernard and her assistants for the time and energy expended in training the children to such good effect. He also thanked the parents for the wonderful manner in which the children were dressed and in fact everyone who had helped to make the hall the success it was. In addition to Mr. Murphy, members of the men’s committee were Messrs W. Y>. Creed (secretary), G. Lee, J. Grindrod, J. S. McElhone, J. Bowler, G. Rodgers and J. Dick, while the ladies rendering service in many ways and particularly with supper, were Mesdames H. Sinclair (treasurer), J. O’Connoi*, E. Hay, Plier, J. Dolan, L. O’Connor, T. O’Connell, Duggan, O. Edgar, J. Dick, W. Dick, G. Lee, V. Christensen, E. Bowater, A. Lyall, W. Pritchard, G. Fuge, J. Perigo, L. Dalzeil and Miss Satherly. Excellent music for the children was provided by Evlyne Lee, Dorothy McKegg and Reti Burgess (senior girls) while a professional orchestra was in attendance for the adults when they took over at 9 o’clock. Among the invited guests were the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Mansford),
