Notes of the Day

Thanksgiving services will be held in Feilding churches to-morrow. The patriotic shop in Feilding yesterday was conducted by ladies of the Cheltenham district and women’s institute and the sum of £65 was raised as a result of the shop. To-day and to-morrow the Waituna West School Jubilee will be celebrated and a large gathering of ex-pupils along with settlers of the district is anticipated. Householders of Feilding are reminded that the house-to-house collection for the 194.5 patriotic fund appeal %ill be conducted on Wednesday evening next. In view of the great victory in Europe of the Allied Armies it is hoped that the response towards the target of just on £3OOO will be such as to fully satisfy the Patriotic Society’s obligations. The members of the R.S.A. in conjunction with the Patriotic Society will be conducting the canvas. The following is the Oroua Rugby Football Sub-Union’s draw for play today:—Waituna and Rangiwahia a bye; Kimbolton v. Apiti at Apiti (referee Mr. J. E. McKenzie). The Ifimbolton team to play Apiti at Apiti, leaving Kimbolton at 2 p.m. will be picked from the following: Barrow, Ireland, Knox (2), Nesdale (2), Beard, Forman, Me* Ewen, Gibb, Anstis, Shapleski, Bennett, Hubbard, Hunter, Roberts, Martin, Fitzpatrick, Ford, Clapham. When Feilding Borough Councillors assembled for the monthly meeting on Thursday evening it was apparent that they were in no mood to settle down to deliberate upon the affairs of the town while thoughts of the celebrations for the victory over Germany filled their minds. The holidays based on the good news had tended to place in the background all but thoughts of jubilation and the idea of turning back to civic affairs before the official period of rejoicing terminated did not appeal. Councillors dealt only with the estimates and then adjourned. Periodically trouble with live stock is experienced on the Aorangi bridge at Feilding and this generally arises from the action of motorists in endeavouring to force a passage when stock are mov ing across the structure. The conduct of traffic over bridges is governed by the West Coast Counties Joint By-laws which provide that vehicular traffic must give way to live stock on bridges. The position is to be made clear by the erection of appropriate notices at each end of the bridge so that those in charge of motor vehicles will obtain warning. A little consideration on the part of motorists would avoid much of the trouble which has been experienced lately. To celebrate the cessation of hostilities in Europe, the Feilding Golf Club held a field day on Thursday when a Victory Medal a#d Mixed Canadian Foursome were played. B. Lawrence put in a good card in the morning to win the medal whilst in the mixed event he and his mother took the honours. Detailed results are:—Victory Medal: B. Lawrence, 86—20—66; C. B. Thomas, 80—7—73; M. Barltrop, 103— 27—76; J. Salmond, 103—24—79. Mixed Canadian Foursome: Mrs. Lawrence and B. Lawrence, 60—17—43; Miss Ent wisle and C. Loch, 68—21—47; Mr. and Mrs. C. H.
