Immense Axis Funds In United States
Received Friday, 11.35 p.m. NEW YORK, May 11. Government departments have begun the consideration of the problem of the disposal of the immense Axis funds seized in the United States at the outbreak of war, reports the Herald-Tri bune. . The Alien Property Custodian at pres ent controls assets valued at 654,000,000 dollars. Against this the Axis Powers hold American properties worth 1,175,000,000 dollars. On the basis of these figures there iB no disposition on the part of the Government to return American-held property to German individuals or corporations.
There was sporadic gunfire in Oslo early on Wednesday morning when Norwegian troops from Sweden entered the city, reports the Exchange Telegraph’s correspondent. The firing is believed to have been the work of Quislings. Bad weather turned hack the majority of the planes transporting Allied troops from England. British, American and Norwegian soldiers have liberated Harstad, Bodde, Svolvaer and Archipoi in the Lofoten archipelago.
