NEWBURY At tlio April meeting Mrs. J. Lancaster welcomed the members, extending a special welcome to three newlyenrolled members, Mesdaines Smith and Whiteloclc and Miss M. Gooch. The motto was supplied by Mrs. L. Healey. An appreciative letter was received from Alton Meehan, who had received a parcel from the Newbury W.I. The Institute decided to donate a raffle for the patriotic shop week run by the Kairanga County. Many willing helpers offered to help in the shop on the day when Newbury was to be in charge. The junior members and Mrs. J. Lancaster are to make arrangements for another dance to be held in May, and a box of chocolates for a competition has been donated by Mrs. E. Collins, junr. It was decided to send Mrs. R. Hippard a box of flowers. The usual yearly prizes for the competitions are to be given every six months. A small single-flower competition is to be held also, Mrs. L. Healey donating a first prize trophy and Mrs. J. Macaulay the second prize. The hostesses for the day were Mesdaines Tams and Yule and Miss J. Y r ule, and the motto was read by Mrs. L. Healey. The hostesses for May are to be Mesdames C. Cameron, C. Collins and E. Collins, junr., the motto to be read by Mrs. M. G. Hansen, the competitions for May are to be: Seniors, four fancy biscuits from the same recipe; juniors, a hand-painted powder bowl. Competitions judged by Mesdames Smith and Whiteloclc resulted: Seniors, floral afternoon apron, Mrs. L. Healey 1, Mrs. F. Yerry 2, Mrs. J. Lancaster 3; juniors, Miss L. Verry 1, Miss S. Hansen 2, Miss M. Passey 3; cluster, Mrs. M. G. Hansen 1, Mrs. J. Macaulay 2, Mrs. E. Doherty 3; single bloom, Mrs. J. Macaulay 1, Miss M., Passey 2, Mrs. M. G. Hansen 3. KELVIN GROVE Mrs. Shepherd presided at the May meeting. Correspondence included a letter from a serviceman, Ray Thorburn. Mrs. Callahair read a report of the annual council meeting. Two local boys have been reported safe after being prisoners of war in Germany for some years. All members wish them a safe and speedy return to their loved; ones. They are L. Maybe and G. McLaren. The Institute has decided now to hold social afternoons every fortnight (Tuesdays) instead of once a month. The social afternoon is to raise funds for presents for local boys returning home from overseas. A roll call, ‘ 4 Why I joined the Kelvin Grove Institute," baused much amusement. Mr. Sollitt, husband of the Institute’s treasurer, who recently returned from several years overseas, was also an honoured guest at afternoon tea, and gave a little speech in thanking the members for parcels sent him while overseas. A word-building competition was won by Miss Parker. Competitions resulted: Vegetables, Mrs. Callahan 1, Mrs. Maybe 2, Mrs. Anderson 3; cluster of flowers, Mrs. Vile 1, Mrs. Maybe 2, Mrs. Callahan 3; single, Mrs. Anderson 1, Mrs. Ryan 2, Mrs. Maybe 3. Miss Rees, a visitor, delighted the audience with two songs. Hostesses for June will be Mesdames Grayson and Maybe, and the competition six pikelets. Each member is asked to take (3-inch squares of material for a jmtehwork quilt for the Red Cross, also needle and thread. NIREAHA The May meeting took the form of a ** husband’s evening" when Mrs. Petersen presided over a good attendance of members, husbands and friends. A birthday spray was presented to Mrs. W. Houston and buttonholes to two old gentlemen, Mr. Cooper and Mr. Drysdale. During the meeting three unaddressed parcels were packed for soldiers overseas. Mrs. Petersen gave an interesting report on the annual Council meeting held in Pahiatua. After routine business the rest of the evening was spent in Competitions, games and items, vocal solos being contributed by Mesdames K. Terry and J. Hawkins. Competitions resulted: Flower, Mrs. Houston 1, Miss B. Terry 2, Mrs. Thomasen 3; three flowers, Miss B. Terry 1, Mrs. Terry 2, Mrs. Petersen 3; vegetable, Miss B. Terry 1, Mrs. Terry 2, Miss M. Petersen 3; fruit preserved in water, Mrs. Terry I, Mrs. W. Drysdale 2, Mrs. Golder 3; custard, Miss B. Terry 1, Miss M. Thomasen 2, Miss M. Petersen 3; soft toy, Miss M. Petersen 1, Mrs. Davis 2, Miss M. Thomasen 3. The soft toys are to be forwarded to the Crippled Children Society, approximately 24 toys being made. Hostesses for the evening were Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Searancke.
