Child Endowment Increase in Australia

Received Thursday, 11.30 p.m. CANBERRA, March 8. The Federal Labour caucus to-day decided to increase child endowment from 5s to 7s 6d weekly. The increase will cost the Commonwealth nearly £6,000,000 extra yearly. More than 931,000 children will benefit. The first child will continue to be excluded from the endowment. The increase in the child endowment, it is understood, was agreed to as an alternative to reducing taxation on the lower scale incomes. The heavy taxation on low incomes has been a source of discontent within the Labour movement for some time.
