Bettle Found Not Guilty on One Charge

DISAGREEMENT ON THREE OTHER CHARGES (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 21. A verdict that George William Bettle, chemist, aged 50, was not guilty of unlawfully using an instrument or other means to procure tho miscarriage of Hazel Rosetta Collins on December 12, 1944, was returned by the jury in the Supreme Court to-day after a retirement of nearly four and threoquarter hours. The jury failed to agree on three similar charges concerning three other women. An application by the Crown for a Hew trial in respect of these three charges was granted by Mr. Justice Northcroft, The trial occupied the Court all Monday and Tuesday and this morning, the jury retiring shortly before 1 p.m. By special arrangement Reuter’s world Service, in addition to other special compilation of overseas Intelligence published in tin’s issue, and all rights therein in Australia and New Zealand are reserved
