Wage Increases After the War

Received Tuesday, 9.50 p.m. BRISBANE, Feb. 20. Wage increases of from 50 to 80 per cent, above prewar levels can be expected in Australia within five years of the war ending, said the Government Statistician, Mr. Colin Clark, who added that a 100 per cent, increase could be forecast for America. In England the wage scale had already risen 40 per cent, since 1938. Australia’s increases were coming more slowly, probably because of the pricepegging regulations. Mr. Clark said wages and prices had already increased about 25 per cent, in Australia since the start of the war.
