The serious illness of Dr. E. Porritt, of Wanganui, only life member of the North Island Motor Union, was referred to with regret at last night’s meeting of the Automobile Association (Manawatu) when hopes for a speedy recovery wore expressed. Mr. F. A. Bates, M.A., who is retiring from the position of inspector with the Wanganui Education Board, was farewelled by board members yesterday. Tributes were paid to his work in the cause of education over a period of 50 years. Ho commenced as a pupil teacher at Normauby in July, 1895. He was at Rangiwahia from April, 1899, to March, 1902, and at Feilding from March, 1910, till July, 1913. His next move was to College Street School where he taught until 1921 and then was transferred to the Marton District High School as head teacher. He has been an inspector for the past 16 years.
