48-hour Railway Strike In South Australia

Received Monday, 10.5 pjn. ADELAIDE, Sept. 4.

All rail traffic was stopped to-day when South Australian railway employees, defying a direction by the Prime Minister (Mr. Curtin) began a 48-hour strike. This is the second strike of 5000 railway workers over the refusal of the Railway Commissioner (Mr. C. B. Anderson) to abolish the system of disciplinary fines. The first strike occurred last Monday when the State’s rail traffic was at a standstill for 24 hours.

Industry will suffer heavily through present stoppage because no alternative transport system exists. The strikers will meet to consider their future action. Their main proposal is to begin a futrher two or three days’ stoppage next week if their demands are not met.
