ARE RACING RESTRICTIONS JUSTIFIED? The restriction on the number of race days allowed was attacked by the president of the Ashburton Trotting Club (Mr. H. F. Nicoll) at the annual meeting of the club (states the Star-Sun). He said that he was unable to find any justification, sound argument, or equity for the curtailment at the present time. Last year trotting permits had been reduced from 80 days to 40. This was illogical, and if the position was not so serious for all those closely concerned, it would be farcical. Racing had been resumed in Melbourne with meetings every Saturday, and this was also the case in Sydney and Perth. Racing was also flourishing in America. Racing was flourishing in these countries, said Mr. Nicoll, while New Zealand continued to be hampered and cramped by a curtailment of permits which was unnecessary. “Why are we given a holiday every Saturday?” asked Mr. Nicoll. “One would have believed it was to enable the people to get out-of-doors and to enjoy ‘hemselves in the manner which most apr r i.’s to them and to enable them to obtain relaxation of mind which is so essential to good health.” The executive of the Trotting Conference was taking up the matter with the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon.
