They Certainly Get to the Top!

Senator Chandler, a Republican and isolationist member of the Senate Military Affairs Committee, told a press conference that the raising of Montgomery to the rank of field marshal is consistent with the typical English policy to outrank Americans in all diplomatic and military theatres. He added: “When I toured the world last year I could not help noting that the British always outranked our fellows. That gives them the opportunity to dominate the show —whatever it is. ’ ’
Chandler recalled that he recently pointed out the shortcomings of British policy in India, and added: “But they are not short in getting on top whatever happens to the land. ’ * Chandler expressed the opinion that “it is time we went over the entire American rank status in the field.”
Senator Thomas said: “I am not impressed. It is traditional that any American soldier outranks in his fighting ability any other soldier in the world. We should not strain ourselves to create a new rank to equal that of a field marshal. ’ ’
