Steady Progress in Victory Loan Campaign

Yesterday’s Investment figures

Friday was a profitable day in the Victory Loan campaign in the Palmerston North area. Investments in War Bonds and National Savings totalled £6310, while 79 applications for stock aggregated £30,860. The total investments to date are £218,962, which represents 14 per cent, of the district’s objective. Latest investments include:—

Barraud & Abraham Ltd 2000 B. J. Jacobs 1000 W. L. McPherson Ltd 500 Manawatu Machinery Exchange Co. Ltd. 500 Manawatu Tyre Bebuilders Ltd. 500 Mrs. H. F. Dawson 500 H. W. Kilsbv 200 S. K. Murray 30 Foxton is on the move, the Mayor (Mr. H. 11. Podmore) having decided to call a public meeting for next Thursday. The district committee might consider the idea voiced bv Mr. H. N. Ward, Governor of the Reserve Bank, of one centre challenging in a friendly way another. Wanganui district comes to mind. Their quota is just over the million mark, but they did better than Palmerston last year, raising over 90 per cent., some 10 per cent, better than the Palmerston area. One incidental sidelight of the campaign is the enormous sums of money held in notes, with its attendant risk and loss of interest. It would surely be better to put the money to a useful purpose in the Victory Loan. A pleasing feature of the campaign is the effort and the enthusiasm of many leading businessmen. Last night short, snappy talks were given iu the five picture theatres just after the interval, the speakers being Messrs. E. ,T. Smith, T. P. Hart. W. L. Hooth, J. C. Young an 48. H. Billens. The committee deeply appreciates the cooperation of the picture proprietors and it is hoped to carry on the plan every Friday and Saturday during the campaign as is being done in every other centre in the Dominion. POLISH CARTOONS ON DISPLAY New Zealand and Poland have ties which were forged on the common battlegrounds of Libya and Italy. That is why a display of Polish cartoons in a window of the P.D.C. has more than usual interest for citizens of Palmerston North. They are being displayed as part of the “Air* to Allies Week’ and “Victory Loan” and are clever drawings of desert incidents in the life of a soldier. The window also contains a number of war souvenirs, including a display of rifle and anti-tank ammunition, Japanese money, badges, etc.
