CAULFIELD REOPENING Reopening of Caulfield racecourse on August 5, after more than four years, proved so popular that the attendance was more like a Caulfield Cup crowd than that at an Australian Hurdles meeting, says the Melbourne Argus. Totalisator investments amounted to £130,186 ss, a record for Caulfield. They were £26,214 5s greater than the previous record, which was established on Caulfield Cup day of 1939. Attendance on that day, when Rivette won the Cup, has been estimated at about OS,OOO. The stands in all enclosures were crowded on the day of reopening, and before- the start of the Australian Hurdles there was hardly a seat left in either of the public stands in the paddock enclosure and in the Guineas reserve. Au innovation appreciated by racegoers was the announcement of starters, riders and barrier positions over the course broadcasting system. These were, given immediately after the finish of each race. IN Y/ORK AT AWAPUNI According to the records at the Manawatu Racing Club’s offices there were between 15U and 160 horses in work at Awapuni during the quarter ending July 30, 1944. It is probable that there has been an increase since the opening of the new season. DEATH OF 11. M. BISHOP Mr. H. M.
